Apart from the genre of painting, painting size is the second most important factor for its sale. Some prefer larger and bigger frames, while some like medium to small frames. It varies from person to person and from purpose to purpose. A painting that would be put up on a big gallery, will look good if it is bigger and elegant, while the one that will be put up on the living room walls will be preferred to be smaller. Also, a portrait is generally of small to medium size while a landscape or historic art is of bigger dimension.

So while selling painting the artist must decide on the target audience and theme first. Depending on that he or she must fix the dimension. It is pointless to enlarge the dimensions unnecessarily as it would make it more costly.

At present, most people prefer medium to small paintings for their living and bedrooms with moderate themes. The most commonly preferred frames are 20″ x 24″,16″ x 20″ and 11″ x 14″.

For posh galleries, exhibition areas and auditoriums the preferred size is generally 24″ x 36″ and 30″ x 40″.

However, an artist must possess paintings of various sizes as different people have different tastes and preferences. However, the important point to keep in mind is not to enlarge or squeeze the painting size forcefully. The painting should be sized as per the demand of the theme and thought.
